Prof. Manolis Tsiknakis (Google Scholar citations: 3925, h Index: 35) received the B.Eng. degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering in 1983, the M.Sc. degree in Microprocessor Engineering in 1985, and the Ph.D. degree in signal processing and intelligent systems in 1989, from the University of Bradford, UK. Since 1992 he has worked as a principal investigator in the Laboratory of Computational Biomedicine of the Institute of Computer Science of the Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas (FORTH-ICS). In the period February 2012 to April 2019 he was a member of the Department of Informatics Engineering of the technological Educational Institute of Crete (TEI Crete). Since May 2019 he is Professor of Biomedical Informatics and eHealth at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the Hellenic Mediterranean University. In parallel, since 2012 he is a visiting professor/researcher at FORTH-ICS.
Prof. Tsiknakis was the recipient of the eEurope/eHealth Award in 2003 for the design and implementation of the regional health information services network, known as HyGEIAnet, and received the award for best applied-research of FORTH in 2004. He has been the Scientific Coordinator or Principal Investigator (PI) in many R&D projects co-financed mainly by the EU.
He has undertaken a series of administrative duties and has been elected and served in various positions of responsibility, including: head of the Laboratory of Biomedical Informatics of FORTH (2002-2006), Head of the Department of Applied Informatics & Multimedia of TEI of Crete (2012-2013), Vice-rector for Research and Infrastructure Development of TEI of Crete (2013-2017). Prof. Tsiknakis has been the founder of the research laboratory of Biomedical Informatics (BMI lab) in 2012, a research unit with active participation in many R&D projects, of which he is the scientific director to date. Currently he is the director of the research laboratory LaTICE of the Hellenic Mediterranean University (2019 -). Prof. Manolis Tsiknakis is also an elected member of the Regional Council for Research and Innovation of Crete (2017 – 2021).
He is an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Biomedical and Health Informatics journal, and a member of the Editorial Board of the European Journal of Biomedical Informatics. He has been a keynote speaker at important scientific conferences, and serves as a regular reviewer in many scientific journals and conferences. He is also a regular evaluator acting on behalf of the EU for H2020 and IMI (Innovative Medicine Initiative) submitted proposals.
He has published extensively – more than 300 articles – in scientific journals and conferences on topics related to the application of innovative information and communication technologies in the field of biomedical informatics, biomedical engineering and translational research. His research interests include biomedical informatics, human behaviour modelling, affective computing, intelligent activity recognition systems and innovative eHealth & mHealth services.
