Demosthenes Akoumianakis is professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), School of Engineering, Hellenic Mediterranean University (HMU), Crete, Greece. He holds BA (Hons) in Computing in Business (1990) from the University of Huddersfield, UK, and MSc (1995) and PhD (1999) degrees in Human-Computer Interaction from the University of Kent at Canterbury, UK. He has been awarded the ‘The High School Graduate’s award’ from the Municipality of Heraklion, Crete (1984) and the 1st IBM Prize for Final year Dissertation (The University of Huddersfield, 1990).
Prof. Akoumianakis joined the Department of Applied Informatics and Multimedia of the Technological Education Institution of Crete in 2005 as Associate Professor. Prior to that, he was a researcher at the Institute of Computer Science (FORTH), affiliated researcher at the University of Crete (ELKE) and industrial trainee / programmer at the Information Technology department at the Co-operative Wholesale Society, Central Manchester Complex. Since 2006, Prof. Akoumianakis is a visiting lecturer at the Hellenic Open University.
At ECE of HMU Prof. Akoumianakis teaches the undergraduate courses ‘Introduction to databases’, ‘Human Computer Interaction’, ‘Collaborative technologies and systems’, ‘Advanced topics in databases’ as well as the graduate courses ‘Management Information Systems’ and ‘Collaborative computing’. Over the years, Prof. Akoumianakis has supervised 10 master theses at HMU and three PhD graduates at the Hellenic Open University and the Katholic University of Leuven University.
In terms of administrative posts, Prof. Akoumianakis has served as scientific responsible of the iSTLab research group at HMU (2006 – today), Head of Applied Informatics & Multimedia Department of TEI-C (2007-2009), Director of the postgraduate program ‘Informatics & Multimedia’ at TEI-C (2012-2014), member of the research Council of TEI-C (2014-2016), Research Director of the Latice laboratory (2015-2019). While at FORTH, he was also involved in European and International standardization activities with most prominent contributions including (a) Invited presentation and position paper, ISO 9241 / TC 159 / SC 4 / WG 5 (1997), Meeting held in conjunction with the Annual ACM Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI’97); (b) Member of the editorial board for preparing of and contributor to the proposal for a new work item under ISO 9241 / TC 159 / SC 4 / WG 5 on the accessibility of interactive product and services. Work item was finally accepted in 1999 and (c) Member of CEN/ISSS “Design for all and Assistive Technology” Workshop and participant in several of its meetings.
Prof. Akoumianakis is author of the textbook ‘Designing User Interfaces – A modern approach (in Greek, Kleidarithmos Press) and editor of the volume ‘Virtual Communities of Practice and Social Interactive Technologies: Lifecycle and Workflow Analysis’ by IGI Global Inc. USA. His research work has been published in leading scientific journals such as Human Computer Interaction, International Journal of Human Computer Interaction, The Computer Music Journal, The International Journal of Digital Libraries, Journal of Enterprise Information Management, Ergonomics, Behaviour & Information Technology, Interacting with Computers, etc) and some of the top-ranked international Conferences sponsored by ACM and IEEE.
